What you need to know

On March 24th the governing body of domain names launched “.au domains. This means you could simplify your website’s URL from “.com.au or “.net.au” or “.org.au” address (etc.) to just “.au” (for example “shop.com.au” could become “shop.au”)

However, if you don’t register your company’s interest before 24 September another business could purchase it. Which means, if you currently have a domain name for your website and emails (for example “shop.com.au”) someone else could register “shop.au”, which could lead to your clients being directed to someone else’s website.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre issued an alert warning of the risk associated with someone else being able to register your firms “.au” domain, “if you have currently registered yourbusiness.com.au, a cybercriminal could register yourbusiness.au or yourbusinesscom.au and use these domains to conduct fraudulent cyber activities.

There is no guarantee that another business will take your name, however for just a small fee you can remove the risk (and the potential hassle in the future - as it might be hard to obtain / purchase).

Then what happens?

All new “.au” domain names that correspond to an existing third level “.au” domain name will be reserved until 24 September.

Holders of existing third level “.au” domain names (for example “shop.com.au”) will need to apply for their direct “.au” domain.

Where there are valid “shop.com.au”, “shop.net.au”, “shop.org.au” etc. domains all wanting “shop.au” there is an arbitration process to resolve who gets the domain.

After 24 September, if no applications have been lodged for the “.au” domain, it will become available to the public to purchase.

What are my next steps

It is very simple:

  1. Apply for your “.au” domain name. A fee will be payable.
  2. Once you get your “.au” domain talk to your web hosting provider about:
    1. .au” email addresses
    2. Web page redirection
  3. Or Contact us for assistance

Please note: this is not advice and it is recommended you first check with your approved IT providers.
